Former Minister of State in then Vice President Joice Mujuru‘s Office Sylvester Nguni has been expelled from the ruling party. No reasons are given directly, but after he was served a 3-year suspension over a year ago, on allegations of ‘factionalism‘ and attempts to oust President Robert Mugabe through ‘dubious means’.
In June 2015, when another 39 ZANU PF members were booted out from the party, Nguni was among those listed as being “expelled“, so we’re not sure how different this new move is to previous event.
Sylvester Nguni was also a Central Committee representative for Mashonaland West Province and is now replaced by Ephraim Chengeta. As he was a sitting Member of Parliament for Mhondoro-Mubaira, and now his ouster necessitates a by-election in his constituency.
Nguni will be remembered for “begging US embassy officials” for assistance as a reward for ZANU PF’s progress. These statements were revealed in Wikileaks cables. He is further said to have been a funder of Simba Makoni’s opposition party Mavambo, while he was still an active ZANU PF member.
Other members that were dismissed from the party include Christwell Mutematsaka who was a Central Committee member from Mashonaland Central and Batsirai Musona, who was also the provincial secretary for security in Mashonaland Central Province (ironically just elevated to the post a year ago).
