Zimbabwe is currently experiencing the most severe load shedding in years with some areas going without power for the whole 24 hours, and other areas just getting power for just 5 hours.
A lot of us are thinking about alternative sources of power but we don’t know where to start. The clear thing however is that while we can use gas for cooking we need electricity for lighting, refrigerator, TV and other electronic gadgets in the house like laptops.
Generators are not only expensive to buy, but you continue paying fuel to keep it running and those costs can quickly get unaffordable.
Which leaves us with solar. There’s a guide prepared by a Zimbabwean who has tried to install solar and has learnt everything the hard way so that you don’t have. Here are the links to the guide, which is titled Solar Power for dummies
- An Introduction
- Getting to know your devices
- The panels
- The batteries
- The wires and cables
There you are.
