Information we have received advises that the Zimbabwe Health Services Board (HSB) has suspended the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association executive with immediate effect citing that the latter incited doctors to go on on strike since October 2014.

Here is the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association statement:

Zimbabwe’s health workers (and other civil servants) have threatened job action of late, after they were faced with a number of issues that they felt the the Government was not adequately addressing.

In an embarrassing show of desperation, the beleaguered Health Services Board (HSB) has suspended the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association executive allegedly for inciting doctors to go on industrial actions since October 2014.

The move to suspend the doctors leadership follows criticism by the doctors over their inept leadership of the board coupled with corruption as unearthed by the Auditor General. The ZHDA views these suspensions as a total joke and a sign that the HSB is being run by people who have no clue of what the Zimbabwean constitution says regarding employee rights. Section 65(3) clearly allows employees to engage in collective job action including the right to strike. What also raises stink in this matter is that the HSB has suspended the doctors representatives without subjecting them to a fair hearing, contravening section 69 of the constitution.

It is also sad to see that the board also does not know that it is a public body that is subject to public scrutiny and calls by the ZHDA for transparency at the HSB is normal in a democracy like Zimbabwe. As the ZHDA, we totally condemn this childish behaviour by the HSB as illegal and unconstitutional. We reiterate our call that President Robert Mugabe dissolve this board as it has failed to discharge it’s duties in a professional manner. We also maintain that this board is highly ineffective and a waste of critical government resources. We challenge the HSB to prove wrong the Auditor General’s report (which) says they are corrupt. We want to make it clear that the ZHDA will not be intimidated by these desperate actions by a desperate cabal of clueless office bearers.

The ZHDA met today and made the following resolutions:
1. The ZHDA is immediately mobilising doctors through its structures and affiliates for a nationwide solidarity campaign in support of the suspended doctors.
2. The ZHDA will take legal action to challenge this unconstitutional action.
3. The ZHDA will never be silenced by the HSB’s machinations and will soon seek audience with the office of the President and cabinet to appraise him of the gory situation at the HSB.
4. ZHDA will tomorrow (Tuesday) call for a press conference to appraise the nation on the state of affairs.
